Generally Speaking

by

As you who have already come here have divined, I speak in generalities about humanity. Though the wise-men say we are all more or less the same we are all different in some ways and, in other ways, starkly different. Murder is but one way as those who murder get the headlines but their number is very few, comparatively. Percentages are the mathematicians formula of throwing their hats at a nonexistent number. Empirical data is an excellent sounding and quite authoritarian word to throw around but it actually means, good guessing. Rather like an estimation of the number of stars in the universe. Good luck with that count.

Generalities are what we all speak in terms of and that is the way of human beings. Authorities of anything spend a good portion of their time apologizing for statistics that they got wrong. This brings to mind, variables. Variables. They are fun in algebra but a nuisance in compiling facts. Facts are not made of brass they are made of vapor. Like a fog that sits for days on the coast and then miserably slinks away when the atmosphere changes. We knew it would happen . . . eventually. All the while you could hear the peal of the brass bell in the shadowy distance.

I find it interesting to write of these types of things as it is writing of things I figured out decades ago but never put down on paper. Combat had a role in this as it made me understand that humans, once in pieces, were so much soil. Thought is gone when the lights go out, so to speak. How the lights go out is of no particular importance but to the one that goes dark. It is yet another way of looking at life and the greatest reason to understand, and thus believe, in God.
